Libération, L'Humanité and Les Echos target President Nicolas Sarkozy, pointing to corruption scandals, failed economic policies and political gambles. Le Parisien-Aujourd'hui-en-France, in contrast, encourages its readers to "Say Non to the crisis". That's the focus for this look at the French papers, Monday 2nd January 2012.

The left-wing daily Libération headlines: “Sarkozy Knew”. It says more evidence has emerged linking him to ‘Karachigate’, a political corruption scandal that has its origins in the mid-1990s.

The far-left paper L’Humanité leads with “2012: a decisive year”, alongside a photo of President Nicolas Sarkozy scratching his head. It argues he is pretending to feel sorry for French people for all the economic pain they are going through, caused - it says - by his own policies.

Les Echos also leads on Nicolas Sarkozy, saying it is “double or quits” for him as he pushes new measures on jobs and taxes.

La Tribune asks: “L’euro passera-t-il 2012?” (“Will the euro see out the year?). It interviews a Spanish member of the European Central Bank’s board, who is optimistic about the single currency’s future.

And Le Parisien-Aujourd’hui-en-France headlines: “Say No to the Crisis”. It talks to French people who are getting on regardless, and has 12 tips on ‘liking 2012’.
