Once driven to the brink of extinction, humpback whales have thrived in the South Atlantic since a worldwide moratorium on commercial whaling came into force in 1986, offering a bonanza to scientists who come each year to Brazil's Abrolhos archipelago to record and study the cetaceans.

In one of his many patisserie kitchens in Paris, he works alongside his team, tasting, testing and experimenting while remaining driven to try new things – from sourdough bread to anti-waste loaves and elaborate Christmas creations.

Surgeons in the UK are training using robotics in keyhole surgery, as part of a drive across the overstretched National Health Service. This more precise surgery within a smaller wound should mean a shorter hospital stay and recovery time, which would hopefully allow patients to leave hospitals sooner, free up bed space and reduce waiting lists.

Vast cosmic collisions over tens of billions of years have shaped our galaxy into the Milky Way that we see in the night sky today. Galactic archaeologist Amina Helma has dedicated her life to unearthing the "cosmic fossils" that help us decipher our galaxy's violent birth – and give us glimpses into its distant future.

As drums echo beneath Mount Olympus and torch-bearing worshippers sing hymns to Zeus, an ancient tradition comes alive each summer in northern Greece. For more than three decades, followers of the country's pre-Christian gods have gathered for the Prometheia Festival, reviving rituals rooted in antiquity while celebrating what they see as Greece's enduring cultural and spiritual heritage.

Chinese scientists have discovered a massive whale graveyard of around 500 skeletons, some dating back to more than 5 million years, at the bottom of the Indian Ocean west of Australia, according to research published in the journal Nature on Wednesday. The whale fall provides shelter and sustenance to a vibrant ecosystem of marine species, many believed to be new to science.

The Central Asian country of Turkmenistan is immensely proud of its horses. The ancient and endangered Akhal-Teke species has become a symbol of great national pride in a deeply isolated state where power is firmly concentrated, and are considered so beautiful that beauty pageants are held for them annually. The species and the culture surrounding them has even been listed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List.

For more than a millennium, Japan has celebrated its samurai heritage with armoured horseriders charging through the countryside during its annual Soma Nomaoi festival. Up until two years ago, the tradition was threatened by soaring summer temperatures brought on by climate change. Organisers have decided to adapt, relieving riders and horses alike by switching the event to the spring.

Eight bottles of Chateau d'Yquem – one of the world's most expensive white wines – were among a collection of 136 bottles discovered under a Czech castle floor that were hidden by the owners after the end of World War II. They have now been restored by the original French winemakers in what the cellar master called a "magical experience" of preserving "liquid memory".

A critically endangered New Zealand parakeet known as kakariki karaka has seen its numbers surge thanks to a pair of super breeders now responsible for more than 10 percent of the total population. Parents Nacho and Trixie were paired up in 2024 at the Isaac Conservation and Wildlife Trust in Christchurch and have since produced 55 chicks, including 33 this year alone.

Scientists have discovered a new species of octopus nearly 1,800 metres below the water's surface near the Galapagos Islands. The team from the Charles Darwin Foundation named the “tiny” cerulean cephalopod Microeledone galapagensis because of its blue hue, which is believed to be the rarest colour in nature.

The Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge in Paris, vanished from sight overnight Thursday as French artist JR, dubbed the "French Banksy", enveloped the historic structure in an inflatable giant cave. The artwork, "La Caverne du Pont Neuf", is a tribute to Parisian artistic legend Christo and his wife, Jeanne-Claude, and will be open to the public from June 6.

Scientists estimate the long-necked herbivore weighed as much as nine adult Asian elephants and is the largest ever found in Southeast Asia.
