Nepali hydropower worker Sanjay Sah survived in total darkness inside a tunnel flooded by the deadly flash flood that struck the China-Nepal border on August 26, drinking muddy water and praying that rescuers would find him. The survivor, who was rescued on September 4, recalls the 10 days he spent stranded.

Australia, which became the first country to ban social media for minors, is planning to crack down on Big Tech further. The government introduced new legislation to force social media firms to allow users to opt out of algorithms. The proposed laws also aim to strengthen online child protection. Opposition lawmakers say such measures would amount to government censorship.

Two weeks after the devastating flash floods, the number of dead and missing continues to rise. At Kathmandu’s public hospital, as well as outside the military base in Bidur, hundreds of photographs of missing people have been put up. Hundreds of families come forward, hoping for news – good or bad – of one or more loved ones. A race against time is underway: helping survivors, finding those still alive and identifying the victims. Rescue teams have been carrying out repeated helicopter flights, as air access is now the only way to reach remote areas cut off from the rest of the world. Civil society has also mobilised, particularly Nepal’s Generation Z. From Kathmandu to Betrawati, FRANCE 24's reporters Alban Alvarez and Fantine Dantzer accompanied a humanitarian convoy along one of the country’s most treacherous roads.

The announcement came two weeks after a devastating ‌flood killed that hundreds and left thousands missing in the Himalayan country and in neighbouring China's Tibet region.

In Nepal, thousands of people lost their homes, belongings and loved ones in minutes during the flash floods of August 26.

Since then, authorities, NGOs and volunteers have been delivering aid. But in overcrowded temporary camps, living conditions remain difficult, while many survivors face an uncertain future.

France 24's special correspondents visited a temporary camp set up in a school in Rasuwa district, near the disaster's epicenter.

A report by Shahzaib Wahlah, Ondine de Gaulle, Achraf Abid and Diamond Uprety.

The rescue brings hope of reaching over a dozen others thought to be trapped inside the tunnel. Both men were flown to a hospital in #Kathmandu. The floods killed more than 1,200 people, and over 5,000 are still missing.

The glacier collapse that led to devastating flash floods across the Himalayan region of Nepal and its border with the Chinese autonomous region of Tibet on August 26 was preceded by early warning signs, experts say. But monitoring and emergency alert systems in the region are still insufficient to predict such disasters.

Rescue teams on Friday pulled two hydropower workers free from a tunnel blocked by mud and debris during the massive flood that swept through Nepal in late August. Officials believe that hundreds of workers remain trapped in tunnels connected to hydropower projects throughout the remote Himalayan region.

A Nepalese worker recounts his harrowing escape from a hydropower project tunnel after last week's devastating flood. Around 900 workers remain trapped in tunnels at six hydroelectric plants in Nepal as the number of missing in the Himalayan disaster rose to 5,624 on Thursday, according to Nepalese and Chinese authorities.

#Nepal faces a major challenge: identifying the remains that have been found after the #flood that tore through part of the country on August 26, some of which are in an advanced state of decomposition. For #health reasons, the unidentified bodies have begun to be buried. Before each #burial, #DNA samples are taken and an identification number is assigned to each set of remains. Relatives of those reported missing can visit DNA collection centres to provide a sample. Their genetic profile can then be compared with that of the bodies found, in the hope of identifying them. FRANCE 24’s correspondents visited one such centre, set up within the #police #hospital in #Kathmandu.

The recent flash floods in Nepal have left authorities facing a major challenge: identifying the remains that have been recovered, some of which are in an advanced state of decomposition. For health reasons, unidentified bodies have begun to be buried. Before each burial, DNA samples are taken, while relatives of people reported missing can visit DNA collection centres to provide samples of their own. Their genetic profiles can then be compared with those of the recovered remains, in the hope of identifying them. FRANCE 24’s team on the ground reports.

Nepali authorities believe that the dozens of workers trapped in hydropower tunnels could still be alive, as some of the tunnels have chambers with air supplies. But rescue teams are still struggling, with difficult weather and heavy rains worsening the situation, reports France 24's Shahzaib Wahlah.

In Nepal, the hope of finding survivors is fading daily. Bodies are piling up in morgues, and storage capacity is reaching its limit. For the relatives of the missing, the wait is unbearable. They go from one hospital to another, consult the lists of survivors and scrutinise the photos of unidentified bodies. FRANCE 24's special correspondents met with several of these families at the morgue of Kathmandu University Hospital.
