For the first time, French champagne producers are allowed to sell their bubbly with more than 13% alcohol, as record heatwaves and drought have resulted in grapes containing unusually high levels of sugar. They fear that climate change may eventually force them to permanently rewrite the rules governing winemaking.  Also in the segment, the European Central Bank raised interest rates for the second time this year amid higher energy costs, as a potential new gas crisis looms over Europe.

France’s record-breaking summer heat has forced champagne producers to contend with unusually high sugar levels in grapes, forcing authorities to allow alcohol content of up to 15 percent in the region’s sparkling wine for the first time. Champagne is usually capped at 13 percent.

Frequent water and power cuts, long queues for bottled water, poultry farms destroyed by the heat: these have been the scenes across Tunisia this summer as millions of people were affected by shortages in electricity and water. Our Observers say this is the result of years of underinvestment in infrastructure while the Tunisian president, for his part, blames "deliberate and planned acts of sabotage”.

French wine production is expected to suffer its worst harvest in some 70 years with the agriculture ministry on Monday forecasting a 6 percent drop in output after a summer of scorching temperatures, heatwaves and drought. France last week announced more than €1 billion in emergency support for farmers.

Wildfires and heatwaves are threatening global efforts to improve air quality and protect human health, the World Meteorological Organisation said on Monday. The UN agency warned that increasingly severe fires are raising exposure to toxic PM2.5 pollution, even as regulations have reduced industrial and transport emissions in Europe and North America.

France has recorded its hottest summer on record this year as the country battled heatwaves, drought and massive wildfires. The extreme weather has continued into September, with France's national weather service placing five departments on orange alert for several days. Temperatures are expected to reach 40°C in some areas. France's agriculture minister also announced a plan to unlock over 1 billion euros in aid to the agriculture sector, which has been severely affected by the extreme weather.

France on Friday allocated more than €1 billion in aid to support farmers recovering from droughts after a brutal, record-breaking summer. The allocation includes €520 million for rapid payments to ‌help farmers deal with weather damage and a €235 million recovery fund to buy seeds, plants and animal feed, Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard said.

In Tunisia, powerful heatwaves are driving power cuts and water shortage. While the country has been dealing with structural water scarcity and recurring drought for years, the current crisis is fuelling anger against the government, even as authorities attempt to coordinate water distribution efforts to quell the crisis.

As rising temperatures reshape France's vineyards, winemakers are turning to Normandy and Brittany, regions once known for cider, not grapes. Those fleeing harsher conditions in traditional areas like the Loire Valley see opportunity up north, though some warn the same climate volatility disrupting southern vineyards is starting to follow them there.

Annette Young is pleased to welcome Gareth Redmond-King, Head of the International Programme at the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit. He warns we are entering a period in which climate change is not only intensifying extreme weather but adding greater instability to the climate system itself. Natural phenomena such as El Niño will then amplify, and intensify, that disruption, effectively “fanning the flames of climate change” and making already dangerous extremes even more severe. For Europe, this means that the extreme heat, drought, water shortages, storms and flash flooding we are experiencing should no longer be regarded as exceptional. They are increasingly part of a new normal for which governments remain inadequately prepared.

Panama and El Salvador have become the latest countries along with Honduras to declare an emergency over El Nino, which has already forced a reduction in shipping through the Panama Canal. All three countries broke their monthly temperature records in both June and July, exacerbating famine concerns.

Ten Nile crocodile eggs at a wildlife park in southern France hatched naturally without the need for controlled incubators, zoo authorities said Wednesday. The natural incubation, a first at the reserve for reptiles, occurred following a series of extreme heatwaves over the summer.

France is temporarily relaxing strict production rules for several iconic cheeses as drought and record heat leave pastures severely depleted. Producers of abondance, beaufort and comté can now use more imported fodder and grain to feed their cows, while other traditional cheeses will also receive temporary exemptions.

Eve Irvine is pleased to welcome Ronita Bardhan, Professor of Sustainable Built Environment and Health at the University of Cambridge. Extreme heat is no longer simply a question of climate exposure. It is a question of thermal safety, public health, energy security, urban design and inequality, explains Professor Bardhan. Her starting point is that, in an emergency, protecting human life must come first: people need immediate access to cooling, through shade, hydration, cooling centres, passive design or, where necessary, air conditioning. The challenge, she says, is not to choose between adaptation and mitigation, but to pursue both simultaneously.

Firefighters in Nevada are struggling to contain a fast-growing wildfire which has already forced the evacuation of nearly 14,000 people. A state of emergency has been called, meaning federal responders are working alongside local firefighters to try and keep it from residential areas. Details by Camille Knight.

Europe this summer has had to face record breaking temperatures, which caused droughts, deaths, and caused devastating wildfires. While the latest heat dome has dissipated, the damage remains – the continent continues to be the fastest warming globally. Will this summer serve as a global climate reckoning? Answer with Stefan Eye-cot, professor of sociology at the University of Hamburg.

The summer holidays in France are continuing. However, as we head towards the end of August, a trend has emerged. Destinations in the north of the country are proving more popular, due to the series of heatwaves the country has experienced this year.

Good news for hiking and climbing enthusiasts today: the Fontainebleau Forest just South of Paris is set to reopen to the public. But a month and a half after the terrible fire that ravaged 10% of this unique haven of biodiversity, the disaster is still fresh in everyone’s minds. Portions of the forest remain closed to the public. Story by France 2 and Camille Corcoran.

Annette Young is pleased to welcome Dr. Simon Williams, Behavioural Scientist, WHO Consultant, Lecturer in psychology and a public health researcher at Swansea University. What concerns Dr. Williams most is that the health consequences of extreme heat, particularly for older adults, are emerging sooner and at lower levels of warming than we had previously understood. We are already living with approximately 1.3°C of global warming, and increasingly severe summers are exposing profound age-related vulnerabilities, from reduced physiological capacity to cool the body to underlying cardiovascular and other health conditions.
