Her new album ‘The Meaning of Flowers’ tackles much more than just flora, as the Danish musician and composer explores the sounds and sentiments of the very beginning of human life. She tells us about creating emotionally rich soundscapes that have often been used in film and television. We also discuss the Faustian pact that artists can find themselves in when it comes to balancing creative, personal and professional lives.

Ireland is managing a jam-packed agenda as the current holder of the rotating presidency of the EU. We caught up with the country’s Minister of State for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne, who was in Strasbourg for the 2026 State of the Union speech and debate with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. We discussed key points from that address, such as a proposed ban on social media access for children, which Ireland is keen to push forward with during its EU presidency.

PRESS REVIEW – Friday, September 18: Russia holds its first parliamentary elections since the Ukraine war. Since only parties loyal to Vladimir Putin are running, the elections are seen as nothing but a veneer of democracy. In sports: Zinedine Zidane will unveil his first selection as coach of the French football team. Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic organisers approve a croc-infested river to hold canoe and rowing events. Finally, the first new feline species in a century has been discovered.

Since Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025, migrant arrests have surged in the United States. More than 610,000 people have passed through detention centres run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the federal immigration agency in under two years. The pace only continues to accelerate: in August 2026, nearly 51,000 arrests were made in a single month – a record for Trump’s second term. Who are the people being held in these centres? What are their living conditions like? And how is Trump’s mass deportation policy upending the lives of families settled in the United States? In this report, Valérie Defert and Pierrick Leurent investigate the issue in Texas – the heart of the new US immigration detention system.

With US midterm elections now less than two months away, a series of videos have surfaced online, featuring celebrities seemingly denouncing the Democrats. However, the clips are fake, and were created using AI, as FRANCE 24's Charlotte Hughes explains.

Speaking with FRANCE 24's Monte Francis, Fabian Zuleeg, Chief Economist at the European Policy Center, says that the partnership between Canada and the EU "is a classic win-win situation – Canada has many resources, has many of the economic strengths that the European Union lacks, the EU has a very large market, it is an important trading partner".

In this edition, FRANCE 24’s François Picard speaks to investigative journalist Emanuel Maiberg, Co-founder of 404 Media. As we embark on AI's uncharted waters, Maiberg has made a most unexpected discovery: the mass acquisition, dismemberment and scanning of rare books for use as training data. His investigation reveals a globalised and deliberately opaque supply chain in which books purchased through anonymous marketplaces arrive at large-scale scanning facilities, where their bindings are removed so that pages can be processed at great speed.

French fishermen have agreed to lift their blockades at fuel depots and ports, including Nice, after talks with the government over financial aid. They say soaring fuel prices since the start of the war with Iran are pushing them to the brink. Also in the segment: India could be hit by fresh US tariffs if it keeps buying Russian oil. US lawmakers approved a new sanctions package that ratchets up the economic pressure on Moscow and its trading partners.

In tonight's edition: the body of a ninth woman is found in Johannesburg as South African police start investigating a potential femicidal serial killer. Also, Africans are excited about what good use of the technology could mean to growth, but many are also worried about what an AI free-for-all could mean for their lives and livelihoods. And Chad’s first music school officially opened its doors on Wednesday night in N’Djamena.

As the United States threatens Europe with more tariffs and eyes Greenland, Russia tests the continent’s resolve over Ukraine and the planet overheats, where do citizens feel the biggest threat is coming from? In her Wednesday state of the Union speech, the European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen went big on manning the borders, suggesting new tools to better deal with migration. This comes against in a context of Ceuta where over two days in July, tens of thousands of mostly Moroccans overran Spain’s North African enclave.

In this edition of Perspective, the acting Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court tells FRANCE 24 that the court is needed now more than ever to ensure there is no gap for impunity. Mame Mandiaye Niang says the court’s job is to step in if domestic justice systems fail. The Senegalese judge is at the centre of a storm amid sanctions put on the court by the US after its issuing of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant over Israel’s actions in Gaza. He explained how the sanctions affect his daily life but says it won’t stop the court doing its job.

François Picard is pleased to welcome Ellis Cashmore, sociologist, professor and author of "Celebrity Culture". Cashmore argues that contemporary celebrity culture has fundamentally altered the relationship between entertainment and politics. There was a time when public figures retained the option of political neutrality. Whereas, today, even silence or refusal to engage can be interpreted as a political act.
